Principal’s Message

Welcome to the 2018-2019 School Year!

I am very pleased to be the principal of this great school in the Greater Victoria School District. This will be my third year at Hillcrest and with that comes knowing the students and families of this close-knit and supportive school community. This year marks my 13th year of being a principal, and I have to say, I am so fortunate to have landed at this school.

I am a proud Mohawk woman who was raised in urban Winnipeg with my mother and three siblings. Throughout my career, I have advocated the benefits and value of teaching and incorporating Indigenous culture, traditions, and history into the school curriculum. I was a part of an Indigenous team to provide input to the revised British Columbia curriculum which now mandates that Aboriginal worldview and teachings be a part of every grade level. I am so proud to be working with the Hillcrest team to make that come alive to both our Indigenous students, those in our local community, and those who come to our school from other countries.

Hillcrest Elementary prides itself on focusing on the whole child: intellectual, physical, aesthetic, and social development are all important components for well-rounded school citizens. We also focus on stewardship of our local forest, and being kind and helpful human beings to each other, and our world. Our students are talented and eager to learn. Our teaching and support staff are enthusiastic, skilled, and excited about teaching and providing opportunities for students to thrive. Our parents are supportive of our programs and staff, involved in their child’s school life, and are a necessary and welcome part of what we do at Hillcrest.

I look forward to another successful year at Hillcrest, and encourage you to drop by to say “Hi” if you are new to our school. Thanks for sharing your child with us everyday – we will do our very best to make their year an excellent one.

Nia:wen (Thank you),
